Mara climbed the stairs she had sworn never to climb, and struck a match against the cold.
The great lamp took the flame as if it had been waiting. Light swung out over the water — once around, twice — and on its third pass it found the far light, and the far light flared to meet it, brighter than she had ever seen it burn.
In the sudden glare she saw it clearly for the first time: a tower where no tower should be, standing on a rock that had been under the sea for sixty years. And at its top, a figure, raising a lantern three times.
